“When I started making work for this show, I was getting over a bout of homesickness. I sought familiarity through everyday rituals; getting into bed every night and sleeping became this safe, welcome experience that I would look forward to. I became interested in dreams as alternate timelines or narratives and how the process of retelling these events often felt so similar to recalling memories. I found myself romanticizing memories of home, until they almost felt like fiction; like a personal mythology. In an attempt to maintain some kind of connection and intimacy with home I kept a dream diary and collected transcripts of my family’s dreams over several months with an aim of finding links between us despite our physical distance. In ‘Quiet Breathing’ I have created a new narrative using this collection of transcripts, recorded conversations, messages and my own memories of home as a way to understand where I belong now.”
Pirrin Francis
Pirrin Francis is a Hobart-based artist who works with installation, text, photography, sound, moving image and sculpture. Her practice is concerned with compiling and re-constructing personal narratives to create spaces where reality and imagination intersect. These stories arise out of lived experiences as well as an interest in mythologies and the natural environment.
Francis graduated from QUT with first class honours in 2011, and has exhibited nationally and internationally in solo, group and collaborative exhibitions in Brisbane, Melbourne and Lille (France).
