A Space In-Between

A space in-between is an exhibition by emerging Tasmanian video artist James Newitt. Newitt has transformed the gallery space into a cinematic meeting room, through controlled lighting, sound, office seating and video projection. A space in-between presents the documentation of two separate scenarios; two discussions about the development and future potential of a private and a public space. One of the conversations is constructed; a speculated meeting between individuals with definite ideas about development, the other is a documentation of an actual discussion. No resolution is reached in either meeting; instead the discussion is initiated and then left open for the viewer to continue the process.

Whether or not these conversations actually took place is not important to Newitt. He aims to initiate debate and discussion about the future potential of the places we occupy.

Newitt's work also exists in a 'space in-between' - concerned with subjects of exchange and interconnection, bridging fields of applied and fine art. He works between art and community, between fiction and reality, between scenarios and characters.

James Newitt is a PhD candidate at the Tasmanian School of Art. He has previously exhibited in Young Designer's Month 2003, 2004 and 2005, the Devonport Regional Gallery, the Long Gallery, the Plimsoll Gallery and the Perth Institute for Contemporary Art. James has also worked on commissions for the Hobart City Council and the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens.
