Folie a Trois | InFlight Exchange with BUS ARI

Folie á Trois exhibited the work of Jamin, Sally Rees and Scott Cotterell in the three diffferent spaces of BUS Gallery, 117 Lt. Lonsdale St., Melbourne.

Jamin

'Common Ground' by Jamin is a series of stencils sprayed directly onto the walls of the main gallery space in BUS. The stencils depict various 'good' and 'bad' characters that have appeared in the mass media - all of them carrying guns. Figures include Saddam Hussein, Trevor Flugge (AWB), David Hicks, Robin Gray, John Howard and Michael Long (AWB). 'Common Ground' investigates notions of guilt and innocence as prescribed by the media and reveals how men in positions of power love to be photographed with a big gun. The stencils were all cut and sprayed in 3 days and were hung on the opposing walls in a mirrored fashion .

Jamin is a candidate for an MFA at the University of Tasmania School of Art, Hobart, where he completed his BFA in 2004 and BFA with First Class Honours in 2005. Jamin has had several solo exhibitions including A.K.A. (CRITERION@Amulet, 2005) and Tasmania: Explore the Possibilities (INFLIGHT, 2007). Jamin has also been involved in numerous group shows including Hatched '06 (PICA, Perth 2006), Group Action 2 (Criterion Gallery, 2006) and the Melbourne & Sydney Stencil Festival (2005, 2006). He is a founding member of the Die Laughing Collective (Jamin, Paicey & Empire) who have had several 'solo' exhibitions together including; Dissent Disrupt Desert (Entrepot, 2004), Die Laughing (Earlyspace, Melbourne 2006) and MAY's (Sydney, 2006); as well as several group exhibitions, private and public commissions and workshops with school groups (including the Youngtown Underpass with Youngtown Primary, Launceston 2006). As well as her independent practice, Sally has undertaken numerous collaborations with other visual artists, theatre companies, musicians and performers and is a member of international multimedia quartet, D Group. www.sally.vkool.com

Scot Cotterell

'The Life Death Oppositional comprises the residue of two separate google image searches using the terms ‘life’ and ‘death’ as provocations.Partly as a response to recent realist photography, but also to do with setting parameters within a system in order to facilitate the creation of art; a kind of improvisatory structure, I conducted the two searches and chose only images that were photographic and only images that appeared in someway posed or constructed. The connection of photography to visual truth of an actual event is a core interest in this work. The images used now exist beyond the camera that may have created them; they are searchable database items, files on a cd, and now digital prints. I have retained no record of their origin.' - Scot Cotterell
