In Stillness In Shadow

In Stillness In Shadow is an exhibition which brings together the work of seven Northern Tasmanian based artists. The exhibition has been curated by Heike Nowitzki, a recent immigrant to the region, and is her first project since relocating to Australia. Heike has worked on projects in dance and visual arts in both Japan and her native Berlin, and has a strong interest in grassroots/ underground arts, adopting ‘the position outside of the mainstream’ as her main curatorial premise.

For In Stillness In Shadow Heike has invited 7 emerging/early career artists to participate in a special installation of their work at the INFLIGHT Gallery, exploring aspects of shadow in our lives, and bringing her own particular perspective to how the works are presented and viewed – “the visitor should step in and immediately recognize that this exhibition is different from conventional exhibitions: Stillness. …the space will be a twilight situation without bright lights, lit mostly by the work (lamps) of Vicki West”

Wests’ lighting sculptures (Caste-ing Shadows 2005-2007) are series of kelp and wire shades. Other artists included in the exhibition are Jo Pitchford, Joanna Anglesey, Edna Broad, Martin Cole, Jonathon Pedley, and Kim Nielsen-Creeley, with works in a variety of media including photography, painting, collage, and installation. The artists each bring their own experience of shadows to bear on this exhibition, combining to create a still space for contemplation.

This exhibition is part of an exchange program between INFLIGHT and Arts Alive, two Tasmanian artist run initiatives, and follows the successful Board of INFLIGHT exhibition at Arts Alive in Launceston recently.
