IN THE HALL OF THE MOUNTAIN KING
IN THE HALL OF THE MOUNTAIN KING is a large installation by Andrew Harper that focuses on his interest in the psychedelic, in repetition, modulation and the now-esoteric world of analog technology. Somewhat influenced by Black Metal Band logos, by contemporary hypnogogic art and music, but also by ‘nerdy’ fantasy role-playing games, old video games and 80s computer games, this installation is an experiment in presenting a new environment, whilst utilising elements from the artist’s past. By incorporating such personally retrospective elements, Harper considers that the use of these totemistic parts may be potentially “hideously self-indulgent” but also refreshingly lo-fi. This installation, more than other works, delves into Andrew's imagination and his sense of the fantastic. Andrew would like to thank the honorable Duncan Kerr and his photocopier.
Andrew Harper is a Hobart-based hybrid artist whose interest in politics and economics informs what his work is, how he makes it and why he even bothers. Much of his art uses outdated mediums, like performance art that lacks subtlety, or photocopiers that don't work properly. His conceptual and aesthetic interests vary daily, but a resolutely lo-fi approach is key and very much at the core of what he does. He likes role-playing games and is currently reading a lot of old 70s Sci Fi novels.
