Industry

Industry 01

The space occupied by the INFLIGHT gallery is not a neutral one: its residual industrial features, its reinvention as a contemporary art space and its partial separation from adjoining spaces reveal a layered past and a heterogenous nature.

Each of the artists in this exhibition have drawn on fine threads, tiny observations and intuitive responses in building works that are anchored to the site - this process reveals aspects that hint at the past, tickle the present and unlock future potential. By breaking the contract of the “white cube,” they depart from the fragile deceit of the singular, contained, and generic by gesturing towards a poetics of the all-encompassing margin; of that which is obscured, incidental or discarded, of that omitted by intent.

Judith Abell is a Hobart-based graduate architect and practising artist with a fascination for transforming ordinary materials.

Helena Demczuk is a practising artist living in Queenstown who, like Judith, is a graduate of the Tasmanian School of Art. She is interested in the transformation of subjects as transubstantiations through light and shadow.

Kevin Leong is from an engineering/science background and is currently studying Fine Arts at the University of Tasmania in Hobart. His work uses electronic media to intervene in the perception of the physical environment.
