LET’S MAKE THE WATER TURN BLACK
This exhibition invites eight Tasmanian artists to look back to their childhoods, and tease out the links between their first engagements with art making and their current practice. It is the premise of this exploration that a substantial part of what motivates and informs adult art making can be traced back to pre-adolescent interests and activities- both formally and conceptually. The participating artists were selected to provide an overview of the changing cultural landscape of Australia from the post-war period through to the world of Generation Y.
Mat Ward is a painter, installation artist and musician working across a variety of media. He was awarded Masters Degree from the Tasmanian School of Art, University of Tasmania in February 2009. Mat has exhibited widely across Australia in solo and group shows (most recently as a solo artist at 6a A.R.I and Raincheck Lounge which followed participation in MONA FOMA's 48 Fugues for Frank Zappa at the Bond Store). He served on the board of INFLIGHT artist Run Initiative from 2007 to 2010, is the Co-ordinator of the Brisbane Hotel artspace, and the presenter of Art on the Edge, Tasmania's only radio show dedicated to reviewing the Fine Arts. This show marks his debut as a curator.
