Lucha libre!

In the traditional arena of Lucha libre!, a melodramatic struggle of good and evil is played out to the cheers and jeers of the enthralled spectators throughout Mexico. An integral part of this melodrama, and its ensuing struggle, is the Mask and its accompanying costume. Devised and worn by new contenders seeking to make a name for themselves, it creates an aura of mystery, the luchador of anonymity. In turn, in Mexican wrestling, the supremacy of theatrical identity is far more important and fought for than any championship belt on offer. Guided by these colourful symbolic parameters, the participating artists have created artworks that appropriate the motifs, iconography and traditions of this melodramatic contest.
