Mobility (USQ)

01 Mobility

The history of art is littered with the examples of art (often broken) that has not travelled well. Mobility focuses on art in its more mobile forms - both practical and metaphoric. The participating artists have links to or have come from places other than Toowoomba (including Tasmania), or made works that relate to other places. Some have collaborated with artists locally and overseas, exploring a willingness to be creatively mobile. All participants are outward looking partly from nature, partly from necessity - something that many artists in Tasmania would have in common.

Mobility is a Post Graduate and staff show from USQ subsidised by the USQ Performance centre.

Kyle Jenkins and Tillmans have created a collaborative dialogue in non-objective art.  Kyle Jenkins (Lecturer in Painting) is involved in many art spaces such as MOP in Sydney and Tracer in Toowoomba. He has recently formed the N.O.T. or the Non-Objective Toowoomba group and is part of the national and international exhibition Minimal Pop. Tillmans is a Belgian artist with whom Kyle has worked and shown with previously.

Simon Mee  & Elizabeth Shaw's Mobile piece was constructed with support of an Australia Council grant for the Wendy T Memorial art Quartet, a project designed by Simon Mee to promote a series of collaborative projects that provide a conceptual play space for the colla borees. Simon Mee¹s concept for Mobility was developed in sympathetic collaboration with Brisbane based artist and jeweller Elizabeth Shaw.  Simon Mee was born and grew up in Tasmania.

Ann-Maree Reaney's piece Blind II is an exploration of space, installation and communication through the appropriation of semaphore flags as aesthetic signals. Ann-Maree has participated in many overseas residencies, been a curator of major public art projects in Queensland and has also studied at UTas.

Kerry Zern's (Lecturer in Textiles) work is inspired by her many visits and residencies to India. She uses the motif of the hand decorated in traditional Henna designs to create her installation. She recently returned from a residency in India.

David Akenson (PhD student and tutour) is also a member of the N.O.T. or the Non-Objective Toowoomba group, and has for many years consistently produced works that often hover between painting and sculpture.

Randal Fedje (Masters Student and demonstrator) has created ceramic pieces using subtle layering and maps that represent the various similarities and differences between the histories of his home country Canada and Australia and his experiences of both. Randal is a Canadian citizen who seems to find more and more reasons to stay in Australia.

Danny Ford (Masters student) has delivered a recipe for making an art piece entitled Dartboard which may be re-created in your own home (if you so choose). Danny Ford was part of The Office and now Tracer projects, two important artist run spaces in Toowoomba.

Ritchie Dona (Honours student) transforms books into aesthetic sculptural objects through cutting and folding.
