Exhibition review by Andrew Harper - Make and Do | January 2024

My name is Reece Romagnoli-Townsend, I am an Aboriginal man. My mother’s mob comes from the Barka (the so-called Murray-Darling River) and my mob are the Barkinji peoples. A lot of my art centres around my identity but I have often forgotten about my father’s heritage. He was born in Italy and moved over to Australia with his parents when he was around 6 years old, I was never really connected to his side of the family or culture. But he was always there for me when I needed him.

My work revolves around my personal archive from family photos and our collection of other documents around our family’s culture and the places we have been. I have also been repairing a lot of my father’s clothing by making embroidered patches to keep and wear the clothes I have had handed down to me.

I have completed my Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours at the University of Tasmania Fine Arts school, and I am also currently undertaking my Master of Social Work also at the University of Tasmania.
