INFLIGHT Gallery presents: Sönaris

An installation by Matt Warren

Opening: 6:00pm Friday, February 4, 2011

Exhibition runs: February 5 – 26

For the first show for 2011, INFLIGHT ARI presents Sönaris – an installation by Matt Warren.

Sönaris is a new exploration for the Hobart time-based media artist and this first incarnation at INFLIGHT will incorporate multi-video and audio sources and melding them into an installation in random combination. Sönaris is intended to be an ongoing project; research, aesthetic and ritualistic. A personal psychedelic/dreamscape environment, a 'hauntology' of fears, memories, depictions of mental and physical sublime moments  and enveloping thought processes and states of mind. The visual and aural abstraction of such elements will create an environment that will hopefully resonate with others so they may feel an empathetic response or a sense of familiarity.

The artist is interested in taking personally interpreted aesthetics associated with transcendence, esoteric beliefs and supernatural imagery and utilising them as random elements for time-based installations (sound and visual elements that emerge and intersperse randomly), where a visitor to the installation will have a potentially unique experience, in that the combination of sounds and images will likely be different for each person.

The title Sönaris is a portmanteau word combining Sonar (a sound that will be a recurring motif of the soundscape), Sonorous (a deep enveloping sound) and “Solaris” (a fictional planet/landscape that is also a sentient being from the book of the same name by Stanislaw Lem, itself the basis for the film by Andrei Tarkovsky.
