Um and other thoughts

Robinson04

Um and other thoughts consists of two works from a series that explores the in-between spaces within language, art and thought. It developed from thinking about the inspiration and decision making processes involved in making art and of communicative exchange in general.

Sally Rees' Exegesis (Necklace) deals with the devices of punctuation, contrasting their graphic abstraction with their specific use. The necklace is made from the full stops, commas and dashes (in their original order) from Sally's exegesis, resulting in a 'discourse' of the pause. They mark moments of reflection, consideration, prior to the decisive moment of choosing the 'right' word or expression - moments of possibility and potential. (Hopefully Sally will want to wear the necklace also.)

The Umatron soundtrack is devised from the pause-for-thought or thoughtful noises that interviewed artists have made while talking about the inspiration for their work. It may be seen as an inspiration aspirator, as if in the next breath the precise thought will arise. It is in real time and therefore consists also of a lot of quiet space.
